About this help page

The styling and design of the RME application is in accordance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 AA to support users with disabilities, and older people with changing or more limited abilities. WCAG standards guidelines are published by the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). For details, refer to the W3C website.

This help page explains how RME can be accessible to a wide range of people and circumstances, including:

Tablet support

The RME interface is designed to be used on a tablet. Users can select buttons and options using touch navigation.

When a small screen is detected, the layout changes to suit the limited space. For example, for eForms, the side panels (Page for navigation and Toolbar for actions) are collapsed so that there is more space to show the form contents. Users can display either panel when needed by clicking the button on either side.

Online help detects the screen size and also adjusts accordingly.

Keyboard navigation

You can navigate RME pages, menus and toolbars using the keyboard, as an alternative to a mouse or laptop pointer.

To navigate, use the <Tab> key. Tabbing will move left to right, and then down all action options in the page. For example, starting at the Menu icon in the top left corner, it will move right to ResearchMaster (link to Home), breadcrumb trail, ORCID link, Help and Session menu (your username).

When using the <Tab> key, each field you tab to is highlighted. In the main menu and on toolbars, a border may display around certain options to more clearly show what is current selected.

To select an option or action, to navigate sub-items, such as in the breadcrumb trail, or for main menu options, press <Enter>. When a menu option has been selected, the option is shown in bold in the menu.

To move in the reverse order, use <Shift + Tab>.

Within a popup, such as in a lookup field, open the search popup by using the <Down arrow> key.  Navigate the grid list using the <Tab> key. To select an item, use the <Spacebar>. To close the popup without making a selection by using the <Esc> key.

To use a keyboard to navigate grids:

Tab to an editable cell in the grid. To move in the reverse order, use <Shift + Tab>.

Use arrow keys to navigate a row.

To edit a cell value, press F2 (Edit mode).

Use the Esc key to exit Edit mode.

Use the <Tab> key to navigate between rows.

Alternative styles

Your institution may offer additional styles that you can apply to RME pages, such as large fonts or high contrast. If these are available, you can access them from the Session menu (your username at the top right of the banner) > User Preferences > UI Style. For details, see: Session menu

Videos

System videos linked in online help provide closed captions in English if viewers cannot play the audio voiceover, or if they have hearing or language difficulties. Closed captions display text of the voiceover along the bottom of screen as the video plays.

When playing the video, go to the bottom right of the video controls and select the CC button. Choose the English option. RME videos are currently only offered in English.

For a list of the system videos available, see: Video library
