This page is used to create or edit ethics categories, which are selected when creating an new Ethics record and Ethics Specifics related item to dynamically display relevant fields to suit the category. The Ethics Specifics related item is only used for Animal and Human template categories.

As a summary, you create an ethics category then select the fields you want displayed when this is selected in an Ethics record, as follows:

        If the Category Layout Designer is used, customise the fields and layout.

        If the Category Layout Designer is not used, select the fields to display in the Ethics Specifics Configuration section.

Menu path: RME menu > Ethics > Ethics Categories Search > Ethics Categories

 
 

Create a new ethics category

1.     In the RME menu, select Ethics > Ethics Categories.

2.     In the toolbar, click the New button.

3.     Complete the fields, using the table below as a guide.

4.     In the toolbar, click Save.

5.     At this point there are two options depending on whether the Page Layout Designer is used by your institution:

        If the Layout Designer button displays, click this to configure the Ethics Specifics related item page layout. See: Ethics Category Layout Designer.

        If the Layout Designer button is not displayed, the Ethics Specifics Configuration and Ethics Specifics related items sections will display in this page. Select the fields and related items to display when that category is used.

Ethics Category: Fields

When adding Ethics Specifics details, if the current date is outside the category validity period, the category will not be available for selection. The current date is based on the system time zone set in System Preferences, Time Zone Settings.

Description

Brief description of the ethics category, such as what it is used for

Guidelines

Text or URL link for your internal guidelines for the ethics category

Layout Designer

Only displays if this feature is licensed for your institution

Used to customise the fields and layout of the Ethics Specifics Page View when the category is selected

When you select this button, the fields for the Page View are displayed in the current layout. You can customise the page by changing field properties and adding, removing or changing the position of fields and so on.

Name for the ethics category

Template Category

Purpose of the ethics category, such as Animal Ethics, Biosafety, or Human Ethics to dynamically display fields and related items when the category is selected in an Ethics record

For Animal and Human Ethics, this also governs the fields that display in the Ethics Specifics page based on your customisation via the Layout Designer button or Ethics Specifics Configuration section.

For example, if you select Biosafety in an Ethics record, the fields for GMO Dealings Type is mandatory, and related items for Exempt or NLRDs and GMO display. The Ethics Specifics related item is not displayed.

Note! This is editable for a new record, or a saved record where this field is left blank. Once a category is selected and saved, the field becomes read only.

Ethics Specifics Configuration

Only displays if the Page Layout Designer is not used for your institution via the product key

After the category details have been specified, identify which fields to use to store information when that category is selected when creating a record. A list of pre-defined fields appears in this section. Some options may not be available for all fields.

Tick the appropriate checkbox in the column of the grid for each field you want to use. The following information can be configured for each field:

Code

Indicates whether the Code lookup should be used to allow searching for a code

Detail

Indicates whether details can be entered in a Long Description text box

Date

Indicates whether the field is for a date value; the user can use a date picker or enter a date

Ess.

Indicates whether the system should prompt the user to let them know the field is blank

The user will be notified and asked if they want to continue to save without the missing details, or go back to provide the information.

Label that displays for this field in the Ethics Specifics page

All fields have default labels but these can be changed to suit your institution. To change this label, double-click the line entry. You can also enter a tool tip if you wish.

List

Indicates whether the field displays a dropdown with a defined list based on a specified category group

Tick the checkbox to see the related category group list.

Example: Experimental Category can be set to offer the list defined in the Ethics Experiment Type category.

All other fields that allow a list of values are mapped to a system list

Indicates whether a number can be entered in the field

Order

Order of the fields displayed in the Ethics Specifics related item

To change the order, move your mouse over the arrow icon and drag-and-drop the entry in the list.

Short Desc

Indicates whether the user can enter a description in a Short Description text box

Use?

For fields with Yes/No options

Indicates whether the field will be shown in the page

 

Ethics Specifics Related Items

Use this section to define which related items and fields to display for the category in the Ethics Specifics page. The options in the grid depend on the type of category.

Default Column Name

Description

Animal Housing

For Animal Ethics categories only

To display as a related item in the Ethics Specifics page for the category, tick Use.

Users can enter multiple housing details.

Animal Procedure

For Animal Ethics categories only

To display as a related item in the Ethics Specifics page for the category, tick Use.

Users can enter multiple procedure details.

Numbers Approved

To display as a related item in the Ethics Specifics page for the category, tick Use.

If selected, Numbers Approved and Approval Condition fields appear in the Number Usage related item

Numbers Required

 

To display as a related item in the Ethics Specifics page for the category, tick Use.

If selected, Numbers Applied and Justification fields appear in the Number Usage related item.

Numbers Used

To display as a related item in the Ethics Specifics page for the category, tick Use.

If selected, the Numbers Used field appears in the Number Usage related item.

The table below lists ethics fields that are mapped to a category defined in the Categories page under the Setup menu option. Only one can be configured, most are system mapped and cannot be changed.

Manage Ethics Category records

You manage core records from the module search page, Results tab. Select records in the grid and select the New, Delete and Export buttons on the toolbar in Ethics Categories search.
